14 March 2002--Senator Bingaman Hill Briefing comments:
Rep. Roscoe Bartlett (Republican - Maryland), Chairman of the Energy Subcommittee of the House Science Committee: "Gasoline is cheap and the lights stay on and America is not focused on energy. And that's in spite of the fact that we face a very uncertain energy future. We need a wake-up call. I just hope that we can get the message out. Somehow as long as the lights stay on and gasoline is cheap many people aren't concerned about energy. When you go out, please be a voice in the wilderness. I hope that there will always be a voice in the wilderness. We really need to start thinking about energy. At some point we will pass the point of no return." |
Sen. Jeff Bingaman (Democrat - New Mexico), Chairman of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee: "Most of the recommendations are recommendations that I certainly agree with..." "They are trying to point us in the right direction and keep the focus on the long-term energy needs of the country..." "I've thought several times during the last day or two that we needed more insight and understanding of energy issues before we got into this debate in the Senate. I think some of the votes that were cast, particularly yesterday, indicate a lack of either insight or information..." "We have an opportunity to take the results of the report and urge that they be considered before we get to the end of this process..." |
